BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO " I-CHING " :
I-Ching
is an age-old Chinese method of divination. It is a fascinating subject, considered to be
sacred. Therefore, it deserves to be treated with reverence, and I-Ching consultation is not meant for frivolous purposes. Down the ages,
it has attracted the attention of innumerable persons of various countries, and have gained worldwide popularity. Briefly speaking, the

ABOUT THE "HEXAGRAMS" & 8 'SPECIAL' HEXAGRAMS :
As mentioned earlier, there are
64 different hexagrams, consisting of any of the 8 different trigrams
as the upper, and any of the same
8 different trigrams as lower.
8 X 8 yields a total of
64 .
Since every individual hexagram in fact consists of two different trigrams of
the same type or two different types, rather than being individual entities - they are actually dependent on their constituent trigrams.
Out of these two constituent trigrams, the upper one is relatively more important. ... In 8 different cases, the two constituent trigrams
become the very same; in such cases, the indicated significations will obviously become confirmatory.
It should further be noted that the individual hexagrams also have also been attributed with distinctive names. But in case of these
8
hexagrams, the respective name remains the very same as their constituent/s for obvious reasons. The Names of these 8 hexagrams, the names
of their constituent trigrams, together with their respective serial numbers in the typical scheme of

WHICH KIND OF QUERIES CAN BE ANSWERED FROM I-CHING CONSULTATION ?
From I-Ching consultation, information about the possible future outcome can be obtained in respect of almost any kind of real life situations. Some example queries are given under :
(1) Possibility of improvement of fortune in future. (Or would it be otherwise) ?
(2) Possibility of fulfillment of desires. (Or realization of the object in view).
(3) Prospect of Marriage in near future & Whether it will lead to a happy union ?
(4) Prospect of Child-birth : Gender of Children (Boy or Girl), Nature of Children.
(5) The state of Health & nature of Sickness : Possibility of Recovery from illness.
(6) Outcome of a Law-suit : Whether it will be terminated in querent's favor or not ?
(7) Business & Profession : Joining in Service, Job-Change, Starting of a Business.
(8) Travels & Journeys : Whether it will be gainful ? Whether it will be enjoyable ?
(9) Lost Articles : Whether there is chance of Recovery ? Where could it be found ?
(10) Prospect in Speculative investments or speculations. Gain or Loss in gambling.
(11) Complexion of a person/ Color of an object : e.g., building, equipment or vehicle.
(12) Timing of realization of the object in view : Whether it will be easy or difficult ?
(Answers to all these queries for everyone of the 64 hexagrams have been given in following under the heading of "ANSWERS TO SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
FROM I-CHING".)
THE WONDERFUL PROCEDURE OF DIVINATION THROUGH " I-CHING " :
A. THROWING OF THE SET OF THREE COINS :
The procedure involves ritual throwing of a set of three coins; the same process is repeated six times. Every throwing of the set of three coins
will correspond to either a broken line or an unbroken line. Further, the broken lines can be of two types (with or without parenthesis) : and
are denoted by "( ___ ___ )" or "___ ___"; similarly, the unbroken lines also can be of two types (with or without parenthesis) : and are
denoted by "( _______ )" or "_______".
For displaying the throwing of coins, a very small holder (like a Ludo bucket or a Snuff-vial) can be shown; whereas the three different
coins can be shown in three distinctive colors - like gold, silver and copper. The colors should be shining metallic, and with every throw
the jingling sound of falling coins will arouse the interest-, and increase the attention-, of the user and the viewer/s.
In the process of throwing, the three different colored coins are used without any particular distinction. Only we are concerned whether we
obtain the "head" or 'tail' - which is obtained by following "random" method. The value of "head" = 3, whereas the value of 'tail' = 2.
B. FORMATION OF THE INDIVIDUAL LINES (OR STEPS) :
The values for head and tail being different, the total value of every throw can be any of the four possible figures : 6 or 7 or 8 or 9.
Depending on this total value of every throw, the corresponding line will be picked up - from the above mentioned four different figures as
shown below :
"( ___ ___ )" or "___ ___" or "_______" or "( _______ )".
Here 6 will correspond to : Moving YIN, and will be denoted by "( ___ ___ )" (= very bad) and
7 will correspond to : YANG, and will be denoted by "_______" (= good) and
8 will correspond to : YIN, and will be denoted by "___ ___" (= bad) and
9 will correspond to : Moving YANG, and will be denoted by "( _______ )" (= very good).
C. FORMATION OF THE HEXAGRAM :
As the throwing will be done six different times, in total, six lines will be obtained - of which any line can be broken or unbroken
(and with or without enclosed in parenthesis). Then these are to be piled up together - beginning from the bottom and ending at the top.
D. THE "LOCKED" HEXAGRAM :
Now, if the total value of every throw is either 7 or 8, then none of the lines will need to be changed; consequently, the hexagram so formed
will also not be changed. Such a hexagram is termed as a "locked hexagram". It has it's individual special significations : Although all by
itself it is not an adverse or unfavorable indication, yet it is not considered favorable, as it stands for the stagnation of affairs in
general; that is, it indicates that the conditions and circumstances whatever are there at present are far less likely to change in near
future - either for the better or the worse.
E. 'REGENERATED' HEXAGRAM :
Otherwise - that is, if any one or more of such values is/ are found to be either 6 or 9 - then a regenerated hexagram will have to be
formed - wherein every line corresponding to 6 will be changed to 9, and every line corresponding to 9 will be changed to 6. In case if such
changing is necessary, then both the original and regenerated hexagrams are to be retained side by side - since both of them have their
individual significations. ... In such cases,
the original hexagram will be considered to symbolically represent the present; whereas
the 'regenerated' hexagram will be considered to symbolically represent the near future.
F. NATURE OF THE LINES - "YANG" & 'YIN', BOTH MOVING & NON-MOVING :
The "Moving YANG" line (this happens when the total value of throw = 9) and the "Moving YIN" line (this happens when the total value of
throw = 6) are termed as "HIGH TENSION" lines. As they are considered to be so highly charged, they immediately change their polarity.
At which level (out of 3 levels - Earth, Man, Heaven), and at which step (out of 6 steps - counting from the bottom) such lines appear
first - and thereafter change their polarity or form - are also considered while assessing the possible future outcome.
Since the "Moving YANG" line (this happens when the total value of throw = 9), is considered constructive, fortunate and favorable, while
the "Moving YIN" line (this happens when the total value of throw = 6), is considered destructive, unfortunate or unfavorable,
change from
"Moving YIN" to "Moving YANG" (i.e., from 6 to 9) is considered "progression" or improvement in future; similarly, change from "Moving YANG"
to "Moving YIN" (i.e., from 9 to 6) is considered as 'regression' or deterioration of conditions and circumstances in near future.
It must be clearly understood that, in rare cases, there may be a hexagram, where changing of any line will not be required. Conversely,
again in rare cases, there might be a hexagram, where all the lines will have to be changed. ... But in more common cases, changing of one or
two lines are normally found to be necessary; theoretically, it may as well be 3 or 4 or even 5.
If too many lines get changed, then it may signify a drastic change of situation - either for good (in case of YANG line) or bad
(in case of YIN line). The change will be more significant if it occurs in the higher levels, and less significant if it occurs in the lower
levels.
If the broken line is "Moving YIN" line (this happens when the total value of throw = 6) is supposed to be weak, negative, passive, and
destructive; it is docile and female. As such, they are considered quite unfortunate. If the broken line is ordinary "YIN" line (this
happens when the total value of the throw is = 8), it also gives similar results; the only difference is that the intensity is considerably
reduced.
On the other hand, if the unbroken line is "Moving YANG" line (this happens when the total value of throw = 9) is strong, positive, active,
and constructive; it is virile and male. So, they are considered as fortunate. If the unbroken line is ordinary "YANG" line (this happens when
the total value of the throw is = 7), it also gives similar results; the only difference is that the intensity is considerably reduced.
Therefore, a hexagram containing more of YIN lines generally indicates an unfortunate situation or unfavorable outcome; whereas a hexagram
containing more of YANG lines generally indicates a fortunate situation or favorable outcome.
There is another factor, which also deserves to be considered : if the number of YIN lines and YANG lines are equal (that is, 3 lines of
both the types are present), then the situation is considered as perfectly 'balanced'; but
if there is predominance of a single type of
line (be it YIN line or YANG line), then the situation is considered as fairly- or quite- "unbalanced".
It should be noted that - by taking the permutations and combinations - only 64 different types of hexagrams are possible (from # 1 to # 64).
Every hexagram has it's own significations.
G. THE THREE LEVELS (THE EARTH, THE MAN, & THE HEAVEN) :
These six lines and their relative levels and positions have their corresponding individual significations.
The bottommost two lines belong
to the lowest level (the Earth), the middle two lines belong to the middle level (the Man), and the topmost two lines belong to the further
higher level (the Heaven).
If the regenerated hexagram is formed, then the change of line in the particular level/s will denote in which particular sphere/s the native
is likely to experience changes.
H. THE SIX STEPS OR THE INDIVIDUAL LINES :
The relative position of the lines also have their individual significations, as given under :
(1) The first (or the bottommost) line stands for smallness, low social position, feet of body (of humans), animals, etc. It is the earliest
stage of any situation, and denotes the beginning of anything.
(2) The second (as counted from the bottom) indicates the native of the hexagram, or the subordinate. It also indicates women and/ or something
has been kept inside. It stands for body-parts - legs and knees.
(3) The third (as counted from the bottom) stands for the place of danger or difficulties. It might denote a possible misfortune, setback, or
reversal the native is likely to face if he/ she tries to rise above the position he/ she actually deserves. It stands for an official of lower
rank. Among body-parts, it indicates intestines, kidneys, and generative organs.
(4) The fourth (as counted from the bottom) is the place of people like a superior officer, authority, adviser, or some such person, who occupy
a very senior and influential position, but whose rank is below the topmost authority. It symbolizes securing a higher rank, and a favorable
and successful resolution to the difficulties encountered (if any). It also indicates exercising caution against the action of the topmost
authority - who is indicated by the fifth line. Among body-parts, it indicates the heart, lungs and the stomach.
(5) The fifth (as counted from the bottom) line is the place of the topmost authority. This is the most auspicious line in the entire hexagram.
This is the position where the situation does not indicate any sign of decay or loss; rather, it bears full fruit, and promises perfect
realization of the object in view. Among body-parts, it indicates the neck, shoulder, and the arms.
(6) The sixth (or the topmost) line indicates going too far, and reaching too high. It may and can indicate getting entangled into possible
conflict with the topmost authority. It signifies separation, possible departure, and/ or ceasing of association or attachment. Among
body-parts, it indicates the head.
I. FINDING THE REQUIRED HEXAGRAM NUMBER BY FOLLOWING "RANDOM"-METHOD :
A 3-digit number should be generated by following the random method*. The number so obtained can thus possibly be any number in-between
000 (minimum) and 999 (maximum). To multiply this random generated number by 4, and then add 1 to it. Thus the number can be any number
between 1 and 3997. Now, to take the "square root" of this figure. Thus, the resultant figure can be any number between 1 (minimum) to
63. 2211832 (maximum).
If the decimal fraction is = 0, then to retain the figure as it is. If the decimal portion is > 0, then to "Fix" the figure (i.e., ignore
any figure if it appears after decimal point) and add 1 to it. This simple process will give the corresponding hexagram number readily. Thus,
The minimum possible figure can be 1, while the maximum figure possible is = [ Fix (63. 2211832) + 1 ] = ( 63 + 1 ) = 64. Thus, we can obtain
the required hexagram number directly (from 1 minimum to 64 maximum). Since all the possibilities have been fully covered, from this stage,
we can proceed further.
[ *N.B. : It can be easily obtained from the Casio (or similar) 'Scientific' Calculators by pressing INV and (.) buttons. A 3-digit number will
appear at random, after a decimal point. However, this decimal must be removed before the necessitated addition of 1 to the "random" figures
thus obtained, one must be sure that the decimal point is removed by multiplying the 0.xyz figure by 1000; otherwise, only erroneous figures
will be obtained. ]
N.B. : But, the limitation of following this method is that the "regenerated" hexagram cannot be at all ascertained. ... So, it will be rather
better to follow the formal method, although the procedure is relatively complex.
Possibilities of changing (including 1 time non-changing) of lines in regenerated hexagram :
(1) No line changing : 1 possibility.
(2) All the lines changing : 1 possibility.
(3) Any 5 lines (out of 6) changing : 6 possibilities.
(4) Any 4 lines (out of 6) changing : 15 possibilities.
(5) Any 3 lines (out of 6) changing : 20 possibilities.
(6) Any 2 lines (out of 6) changing : 15 possibilities.
(7) Any 1 line (out of 6) changing : 6 possibilities.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thus, in total, there can be as many as 64 possibilities (in every case).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As such, out of 64 hexagrams, for every one, there can be as many as 64 possibilities : 63 possibilities cover any kind of change, and only
1 possibility in case of no change. Thus, finding the true 'regenerated' hexagram is extremely difficult - if at all possible - by following
"random" method; this is since it will make 64 X 64 = 4096 possibilities, and writing text matter for 4096 variations (instead of 64) will
surely be a very time-consuming and extremely arduous task. It might take 3 to 4 months to complete; but that much of time I am certainly not
in a position to spend on "I-Ching" alone.
However, if we do not want to go for showing the hexagrams, but opt for providing only the text matter as prediction, then the 'regenerated'
hexagram can also be quickly found in the same way by following the very same "random" method once more. But, that way, the user's interest
might be diminished, authenticity of offered predictions might become doubtful, and there might remain some scope of facing hostile criticisms
and open objections.
